Can stretch marks be removed with laser?

Yes! Stretch marks (striae) can be removed with laser treatment. In order to do so, there are two types of laser treatments for stretch mark removal, namely, ablative laser treatment and non-ablative laser treatment.

With ablative laser treatment, the surface layer of skin in the treatment area, known as the epidermis, is completely removed, allowing for the generation of newer, healthier, and firmer skin tissues to replace the old.

With non-ablative laser treatment, the surface layer of skin remains intact, while the lasers used in this treatment method target the tissues beneath the epidermis to stimulate increased collagen and elastin production in the treatment area. Collagen and elastin are fibrous proteins that are integral to wound healing and the structural integrity of every connective tissue in our body, including the skin. Moreover, our body naturally loses collagen and elastin as we age, resulting in skin issues like fine lines, skin laxity, and stretch marks. As such, non-ablative laser treatment aims to improve the appearance of stretch marks by firming and tightening the skin with supplemented and increased collagen and elastin in the treatment area.

How many laser sessions does it take to remove stretch marks?

The number of sessions required to remove stretch marks sufficiently depends on how many there are, long they have been on your skin, and how visible they are. As such, while some patients may require three treatment sessions, others may require up to ten laser treatment sessions to achieve their desired results.

In general, laser treatment sessions for stretch mark removal take approximately 45 minutes to one hour and can be repeated once every four to six weeks for best results.

Can you permanently remove stretch marks?

Since stretch marks are the sign of tears deep in the dermis, they cannot be completely removed. With that being said, treatments such as ablative and non-ablative laser stretch mark removal can make the skin in the treatment area significantly smoother, and the stretch marks less noticeable. Furthermore, the results you achieve from laser stretch mark removal will be permanent. As such, while we cannot guarantee that you will no longer have any stretch marks, we can assure you that the ones we get rid of with laser stretch mark removal will be gone forever!

Why do I have so many stretch marks?

There could be numerous potential causes of stretch marks appearing on your body, including various medical conditions, medications, and other circumstances, such as the following:

  • Adrenal gland disorders, such as Cushing’s syndrome, which is a condition that involves an increase in the amount of cortisone in the body, thereby affecting your skin’s elasticity
  • Bodybuilding
  • Breast enhancement surgery
  • Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, which is a condition that involves genetic changes to collagen
  • Family history
  • Marfan’s syndrome, which is a genetic condition that causes unusual growth and weakened skin fibers
  • Pregnancy, as the skin stretches to make room for the growing baby, especially in the third trimester
  • Rapid weight gain or loss
  • Sudden growth spurt
  • Use of corticosteroid creams or lotions, as they can decrease the skin’s elasticity
